Pennsylvania State Rep. Brian Sims on Tuesday stomped misogynist TEApublicans attempting to restrict women’s rights in that state. The bill approved by the Pennsylvania House restricts women’s access to healthcare by preventing private insurers from covering certain services. So much for the “free market” right?
Sims’ floor speech was dramatic, powerful and poignant – and called out the misogynist lying hypocritical TEApublicans directly!
Mr. Speaker, I rise to implore my colleagues to oppose House Bill 818.
“As a civil rights advocate I see clearly, as do millions of men and women across the Commonwealth, that this Bill’s purpose is to discriminate against women, and most often women with less means than many of my colleagues have here today.
As an attorney, I see clearly that this bill oversteps federal law, effectively outlawing a “private” insurer from offering private coverage that would allow for a woman to exercise a Constitutional Right.
Such illegal and repugnant attempts to make an end around the United States Supreme Court and the U.S. Constitution are beneath this body, as they were beneath our former Governor when he attempted unsuccessfully to thwart the Constitution over two decades ago. It certainly flies in the face of any ideology or party that claims to support free markets.”
Here is the most powerful quote from Representative Sims’ speech,
“This legislation is about advancing an ideology of oppression and suppression, even if such a plan means ignoring the oath of office that each of us swore. As a reminder, Mr. Speaker, I do believe this has been forgotten entirely by many of my colleagues today: Each of us put our hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. We did not place our hands on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.”
Representative Sims went further, posting on his Facebook page,
“We need as many people as possible, not just Pennsylvanians, to call and write to our Republican House and Senate Leaders and tell them that forcing private insurance companies to stop selling private insurance to women in order to exercise their own Constitutional Rights at their own expense doesn’t make sense even under a conservative ideology!”
