We’ve been saying for a while that white Evangelical Christians possess an overgrown victim mentality. Now, a recent Pew poll has confirmed that belief. Since American politicians — especially those on the Right — expend considerable time and energy cozying up to that particular demographic, and given that same group’s repeated efforts to discriminate against others (including LGBT individuals and African-Americans), anything approaching a belief that the same people who view flopping around on the ground screaming incoherently as a religious experience somehow face discrimination is nothing short of laughable.
Unfortunately, white evangelicals are so deluded that they feel society is simply intolerant of them. Boo [email protected]#$ing hoo.
In a survey of 2,002 Americans, Pew found that white evangelicals are more likely to perceive discrimination against them than many surprising groups, including atheists, Muslims, black people, Hispanics, and Jews.
According to the poll results, a whopping 50 percent of the Caucasian God Squad say that they face discrimination. When that particular voting bloc considers others, however, it’s a different story. Only 45 percent of white evangelicals say that Muslims face discrimination, 36 percent feel that black people don’t get a fair shake, 32 percent feel that Hispanics get a raw deal in America, 29 percent say that Jews have it rough, and 19 percent consider atheists to be a group that faces discrimination.
Interestingly, the same group that says these people do not face discrimination has pushed for legislation that negatively impacts nearly every single one of the groups they say face tribulations at lower rates than they do.
White Evangelicals’ perception of discrimination, according to everyone else, is overblown by a landslide. Only 31 percent of all respondents say that particular group faces discrimination. Everyone, aside from the obvious outlier, possesses a more realistic view of discrimination overall.
Of all respondents, 65 percent say LGBT people face discrimination, 59 percent are realistic about anti-Muslim sentiments, 54 percent realize that black people don’t always receive fair treatment, and 27 percent realize that atheists are often mistreated. The only answers provided by Caucasian Evangelicals that comes close to matching the opinion of the rest of Americans’ opinions relate to Jewish people and Catholics.
An astonishing 30 percent of white Evangelicals say that they are a “minority” because of their beliefs — the highest of any group in the country.
The poll also reveals that conservative propaganda…works.
Only 13 percent of white evangelicals view the Obama administration as friendly toward religion, a 7 percent drop from 2009 — and a drastic difference from the rest of the country. In total, 30 percent of Americans view President Obama as being friendly to religious people.
There you have it, folks: White Evangelical Christians possess a victim mentality, and believe that the Obama administration is out to get them. While this is unsurprising, it’s interesting to see the numbers.
