While the heartless and clueless Teapublicans behind this government shutdown fiasco try their hardest to claim that it really doesn’t hurt anybody, the truth continues to seep out of the cracks of their lies and prove them wrong. In the first couple days of the shutdown, the government joined forces to pass a quick small bill to ensure that our brave soldiers over seas continue to get paid. However, in their haste to circumvent their own mess, they neglected to include payments made to families when their loved ones are taken from them by the enemy. As reported by US NEWS on NBC.com in what is one of, if not the, most horrible moments of their lives, they are forced to add on the stress of how to pay for the funeral services.
When a member of the armed services is killed in action, their families receive a number of benefits. First, within days a payment of $100,000 is sent to the family. In addition to that families also receive either $9000 or $6000 more, depending on whether they are buried in a private or national cemetery, respectively; and finally families also receive a one year housing allowance that varies depending on where the family lives. These are all monetary sums given to families in their greatest time of need as an attempt to compensate for the sacrifices of their loved ones, and currently they’re not being made to the currently seventeen families who have lost their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, mothers, and/or fathers in the military since the shutdown began on October 1st.
The Right likes to claim that they’re the ones who respect and honor our men and women in uniform more, so let them put their money where their mouths are. If they really give a damn about these people, they should retreat from this losing battle and just pass the clean CR. This way, not only would these important payments be made, but all of the other people affected would be helped as well. Unfortunately, what will probably happen is that Congress will pass another quick little bill, just to keep the heat off of their backs over this particular outrage, and then go back to bickering while other people suffer.
