This election cycle, right-wing politicians are taking a page from certain churches’ books and buying popularity with gun raffles.
Seem like a bad idea? It sure is –but with conservatives’ obsession with guns there is no more surefire way to make oneself a god amongst the Teabilly crowd than to lure them in with a smile and an AR-15.
On Thursday, Clint Didier, a Tea Party Republican, announced that he will be giving away two Ruger 2300 LC9 pistols and a DB-15 S rifle in an effort to gain support in his bid for retiring Washington Rep. Doc Hastings’ seat.
Hastings is just the latest to prey upon conservatives’ paranoid ‘Yer not gonna git mah guns’ attitude. Who else has joined in this new tradition of winning over stupid people with weaponry?
Ron Paul is chairman of Campaign for Liberty. The group, which promises to “promote and defend the great American principles,” announced that it would be giving away an AR-15 in April in an effort to win the simple hearts and simple minds of right-wingers. [divider]

SC State Sen. Lee Bright
This state Senator’s not-so-bright idea of giving away an AR-15 did nothing to assist him in unseating superstar bigot Lindsey Graham in the SC Republican primary, but at least we now know that giving away weapons makes one “pro-Constitution.”
According to an e-mail Bright sent announcing the contest:
“I know the political talking heads may sneer as they continue blaming guns and law-abiding gun owners for the acts of thugs and madmen. But I am the pro-gun, pro-Constitution candidate in this race for the U.S. Senate — and I can’t think of a better way to get that word out than by giving away a brand new AR-15.”
Other conservatives have offered similar bribes in an effort to bring in the votes. For instance, Colorado gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo teamed up with pants-pooping pedophile Ted Nugent to raffle off an AR-15 to one lucky supporter. Unfortunately, this seems to be the prevailing strategy in right-wing-land. Give a man a gun and he’ll assume that you’re a patriot…or…something.
