More details have surfaced about the Federal Courthouse shooting in Wheeling West, Virgina, none of which should come as any great shock. When Thomas Piccard, a former police officer from the area, went on his shooting spree from a parking lot outside of a Federal courthouse in Wheeling, some wondered why more weren’t injured or killed. A few had been taken in for minor injuries as a result of the breaking glass; but the only major casualty of the event was Piccard himself, who was shot through the chest by responding officers. Piccard purchased both the rifle and pistol he used from local firearms dealers–the rifle six days before the shooting, and the pistol in 2011. Background checks were performed for both purchases.
As we stated in our last update, the reason more weren’t injured was because the assault was directed not against any particular person, but against the building itself. Symbolically, against the institution of the Federal government.
According to the latest update from U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld, Piccard had on his person at the time a five page manifesto that detailed his reasons for the attack.
While they aren’t releasing any specific details (probably to spare Glenn Beck and Alex Jones the discomfort of seeing their own words in scrawling print), the basic gist is that Piccard hated the Federal government, a woman had broken his heart, and he was going to make his stand against a building as a last act of defiance.
The inanimate object was not available for interview.
If any of this sounds eerily familiar, then don’t worry — you’re not experiencing a glitch in the Matrix. You’re experiencing yet another “isolated incident” of Right-Wing violence directed toward government entities.
Just today we reported on another, technically unrelated shooting all the way across the country in Los Angeles. This time, the gunman, Anthony Cianca, did manage to kill one person — an employee of the TSA.
While a certain degree of pathological hatred toward the TSA is a completely rational part of every airline passenger’s mental makeup, there are some creepy similarities between Picard and Cianca:
- Both carried letters detailing their motives,
- Both subscribed to Alex Jones-style anti-government paranoia; Cianca even had “NWO” scribbled on his note. Residents of Jonestown will recognize that as the acronym for “New World Order.“
- Families and associates of both report recent concerns over their mental states, and possible mental illness.
- Neither targeted what they considered to be “innocent bystanders“; Piccard seems to have avoided firing at readily available targets in and around the building, and Cianca told one witness “I don’t like this.”
- Both targeted government institutions, as opposed to specific people.
- Both used (as far as we know) recently and legally obtained assault-style rifles.
But, hey…maybe those are just all coincidences. We’re not positive of anything right now. Sure, we could take the meta route here and say that we’re not going to start any conspiracy theories about Alex Jones and Glenn Beck. We could say that we’re not going to say that their self-serving fearmongering caused the Boston Bombing, and that they’re killing people in the real world. We’re similarly not going to say that Beck and Jones are anarcho-capitalists who want to rape America’s virgin soul, and that they’re the bastard children of industries which get rich terrorizing the populace. We’re not saying that Alex Jones and Glenn Beck are definitely selling the seeds of psychosis to the violent and intellectually lazy, thus driving up sales of the gold and survival supplies that both peddle on their websites. We’re not saying anybody’s out there driving people to worship Satan or anything. We’re not going to say anything for sure.
We’re not even going to mention that we MIGHT have attempted to subconsciously direct the casual reader to certain notions by obviously bolding specific keywords in the preceding paragraph. Not that we would have done that, because only an utter bastard would take advantage of ignorance and intellectual laziness in such a manner. But, COULD that have been the case?
We don’t know…we’re just asking questions.
