In the wake of the Darren Wilson’s shooting of Mike Brown and his going into hiding, Wilson has received quite a bit of support, and not just from teabaggers, either. A few police unions have also supported Wilson as well, but some are refraining. And if you want an example of why they’re refraining, well, take a look at this CNN footage that shows what happens when you get a Darren Wilson supporter next to a minority shop owner from the area.
While CNN’s Jake Tapper was out and about with the pro-Wilson crowd, a local business man dropped in, telling Tapper that he wanted the rallies to end because it was making the African-Americans in Ferguson feel besieged. He told Tapper that he was for “peace” and felt that the rallies were only throwing fuel on the fire. Wilson’s supporters didn’t take it very well, as you might expect, and they reacted predictably: the pro-Wilson crowd began shouting him down.
When a man confronted the business owner and said that “It’s my first amendment right” and “I am a United States citizen,” the business owner answered that he was also a citizen. It’s at that point that another Wilson supporter approached him and said, “Do you speak English?” despite the fact that the owner had been speaking English the whole time.
This understandably enraged the business owner, who got in the man’s face and yelled, “I am speaking English. Do you understand that? You stupid jackass!” The pro-Wilson supporters retreated, laughing. Meanwhile, the gentleman with the makeup made to look like the injuries that Officer Wilson supposedly suffered continued clapping.
It should be emphasized that this gentleman in the makeup had been clapping the whole time, even while the store owner was trying to talk.
It’s a perfect representation of how the people who live in Ferguson have had their voices drowned out. And even as the ill-will between the police and the Ferguson residents cools down, the supporters for Darren Wilson have been growing in number, and their voices have been getting louder. His GoFundMe drive cleared it’s $235,000 goal in just nine days. And as Jon Hendren noted on twitter, many of the people donating were celebrating the idea that Wilson shot “a street thug” and added comments that were openly racist:
This is a specter America is not going to easily rid itself of, if it succeeds in ridding itself of it at all.
