Mix two parts pride, three parts cowardice and .45 caliber of opportunity — that’s the modern police officer. Maybe it’s because of that that Darren Wilson’s killing of Michael Brown has become such a flashpoint in the United States. It’s not because Wilson is exceptionally anything, including possibly even racist; it’s that he’s utterly, absolutely typical.
The video below is an excerpt from Wilson’s full interview on ABC, during which he taught the majority of those watching that it was possible to hate a killer even more after hearing their story than before it. For sure, some people saw in Wilson’s face a national hero — Grand Jury “prosecutor” Robert McCulloch certainly did. He could have saved the $400,000 he helped raise for Wilson’s defense, since this “prosecutor” might as well have been Wilson’s defense attorney.
But the majority of us saw in Wilson’s face, and heard in his words, The Problem. And The Problem is that people like Wilson are trained to do exactly what he did: gun down anyone who frightens or insults them. Wilson is one cell in a rapidly metastasizing cancer of chronically terrified, fear-biting animals with badges.
Justice has failed when a police officer’s job is no longer to remand criminals to stand trial, but in themselves act as judge, jury and executioner. Wilson says “he was just doing his job” — we say that any time an officer fails to bring a living criminal in to stand trial, he’s failed at his job. Wilson and people like him aren’t heroes.
They’re failures, cowards…and proud of it.
No wonder conservatives love them so much.
“I take [the gun] out and I point it at him, and I said ‘Get back or I’m going to shoot you.’ And then his response, immediately, he grabs the top of my gun. And when he grabbed it he says ‘You’re too much of a pussy to shoot me.'”
