The apparent consensus across the country is that Tail Gunner Ted Cruz is one of the main architects of the shutdown but former GOP front man Tom “The Hammer” DeLay thinks that those of us who feel that way are not “real” Americans.
In an interview on CNN Thursday he said, “When you’re in a fight, people just don’t like the fight, so they’re going to respond negatively. It’s who wins and comes out of the fight that has long-lasting effects. And I got to tell you right now, out here in the real world, outside of New York and Washington, D.C., these people think Ted Cruz is a hero. They think that those Republicans in the House are heroes. And they think that Obama is destroying this country.”
Tom may think that Texas is the ‘real world’ and that all Texans agree with him, but there are those even in his state who apparently disagree, a glaring exception being Tail Gunner’s hometown newspaper The Houston Chronicle, which is rethinking its endorsement of him in his bid for his Senate seat.
In an op-ed Tuesday, titled “Why We Miss Kay Bailey Hutchison,” the paper noted that Hutchinson had an “extraordinary understanding of the importance of reaching across the aisle when necessary.” This is an ability that has not been displayed by Cruz or the senior Senator from Texas John Cornyn.
Explaining the paper’s change of heart, the piece said, “When we endorsed Ted Cruz in last November’s general election, we did so with many reservations and at least one specific recommendation – that he follow Hutchison’s example in his conduct as a senator. Obviously, he has not done so. Cruz has been part of the problem in specific situations where Hutchison would have been part of the solution.”
Of course it is understandable that DeLay would think that he and his cohorts are the ones living in the “real” world. He gained the nickname ‘The Hammer’ by demanding as House majority whip that members of his party always vote as they were told to vote. He tolerated no deviation from the party line.
It is doubtful that DeLay or Cruz will come to recognize what the real world is any time soon, since they believe that those who disagree with them reside only in New York and D.C. Perhaps the election next November will be the wake up call that opens their eyes.
