Speaking to a near-empty ballroom during CPAC’s failed “minority outreach” panel, lobbyist Elroy Sailor made the all-to-familiar claim that abortion is more damaging to the African American community than slavery.
“Look, abortion has been worse on the African-American community than the slave trade, than Jim Crow ever. … The African-American community, we make up 30 percent of abortions in the country. That’s going out of the world backwards, my friend,” Sailor said during his Thursday appearance on the panel.
The panel, entitled “Reaching Out,” was intended to focus on how conservatives can appeal more broadly to minority voters. But interestingly, the rhetoric that Sailor employed is the exact same tactics used by extremist members of the pro-life movement when trying to use minorities as talking points in their anti-abortion propaganda.
Speaking to Virginia Senate candidate and fellow panelist Ed Gillespie, Sailor went on to claim that it’s the Democrats’ position on abortion and guns that have hurt GOP appeal in African American communities.
Then there was this bizarre statement:
“Look, as a black man Ed, unfortunately the statistics say that I’m probably going to die before you, man,” Sailor said. “And that’s not fair. So why do I want the federal government keeping my money and investing it and then giving it back to me when I’m not even going to be here? Let me keep more of my resources and invest it in my family”
