Sometimes a story is shocking, not because of the laws that were broken, but because of what horrible actions can be carried out legally. Of course, who better to toe the line of legality than an officer of the law?
In the town of Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, a Laceyville Borough Police Officer was caught selling an AK-47 on camera. Now you can take that statement and let the initial absurdity wash over you, but then a terrifying reality sets in; according to law, he didn’t do much wrong. In fact the primary concern being addressed is the fact that he was simply on duty.
At the end of the day, according to Pennsylvania’s laws, all forms of rifles and shotguns can be transferred between unlicensed individuals. In other words, had this not been an on-duty cop, it would have been just another legal gun sale, devoid of pesky background checks and paper work. Luckily, watching a supposed protector of the community sell firearms on the street jarred some residents into caring. Phillip Brewer, the mayor of Laceyville, spoke severely of the situation, stating
I was shocked, I was shocked. Especially when there’s an automatic weapon involved and the public was exposed.
There are many that agree with Mayor Brewer, but automatic weapons continue to be exposed to the public on a regular basis. According to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, more than 95% of inmates already prohibited from possessing a gun at the time of the crime obtained their firearm through an unlicensed private seller. Perhaps it’s time to start taking notice when anyone sells a deadly weapon out of their trunk, not just someone in uniform.
