Well, you’ve got to hand it to TEApublicans, they’re consistent if nothing else. The mantra of the Tea Party is “smaller government,” and apparently what they mean by that is they want to make the government so small, it can slip underneath your bedroom door to see what you’re up to. At least that’s the sense you get from them when they talk about immigration reform. They seem to be really hung up on the notion of procreation — how many babies immigrant families have — and the voting proclivities of said immigrant children once they’re born.
I suppose it shouldn’t be any surprise that the same group that thinks the government has a right to regulate sexual orientation would be so obsessed with the sex lives of immigrants, but it’s still a bit off-putting when you read some of the stories.
Take for instance Phyllis Schlafly, founder of the Eagle Forum. I’m sure you can tell from the use of the most patriotic bird ever(!) that Eagle Forum is a conservative, Tea Party-affiliated group. Schlafly and her Eagle Forum friends have been quite vocal in demanding the GOP stop pushing for immigration reform. That alone isn’t the eyebrow-raising part of her story; it’s the fact that she apparently thinks Republicans have a cornerstone on morality — not a big shocker there — and that Latino and Hispanic people are just inherently more sexually promiscuous. She said recently on a conservative talk radio show that Latinos do not “have any Republican inclinations at all.”
In case you’re wondering, “Republican inclinations” is code for “good morality and family values” because she followed up with this zinger, saying Latinos are “running an illegitimacy rate that’s just about the same as the blacks are.” It’s a one-two punch of racism. She not only disparages Hispanic people as sex-crazed and immoral, but she craftily throws the African-American community right under the bus with them.
Here’s the audio of Schlafly’s radio appearance:
If you want to hit the jackpot when it comes to racist blather coming from a gaping may of conservative idiocy, you need only cast your gaze upon the Sultana of Racism herself, Ann Coulter. To list all of Coulter’s racist remarks about immigrants would take up more page space than we have to offer, so we’ll just clue you into her most recent spouting. In Coulter’s latest piece, she once again smashes her previous record for “most insane right-wing tripe ever crammed into one space” as she implies that — get this — Democrats want to bring more immigrants into the country because we’re all too busy aborting our babies and we know Latinos don’t abort their babies so this gives us an unending supply of new voters to choose from.
If you’re still reeling from the stupidity of Coulter’s argument, I don’t blame you. Not only does she just casually assume that all liberals abort their babies casually and without remorse, she presumes to know the values of Latino voters. I don’t know what’s worse, that Coulter spews idiocy like this, or that there are people naive, stupid or ignorant enough to buy into it. Coulter’s danger is that she gleefully perpetuates all the unproven and downright racist stereotypes that knuckle-dragging rank-and-file Republicans use as the basis for their opinions on immigrants and liberals, and we wonder why they all think we’re godless heathen baby killers.
The good news for progressives is that people like Schlafly and Coulter aren’t going away. In fact, they feel emboldened by the pressure of seeing all their hard work, their decades of tirelessly demagogue-ing and lying about the left-wing and what will happen to the country if we “get our way” to accept it’s all to be for naught. The Supreme Court essentially rejected their claim to incessant bigotry this week, and even though they won in terms of the Voting Rights Act, the undeniable trajectory of the country is away from their ideologies of ignorance, pseudo-science and propaganda that spits in the face of anyone that doesn’t fit the white, Christian conservative mold they were made from. The more they open their mouths, the more they get exposed, and the less chance they have of bringing new people into their hateful fold.
