While in the middle of a discussion over whether or not the city of San Francisco should rename a road tunnel after the late Robin Williams, conservative talking head Michael Savage took a detour and a potshot at veterans who have PTSD.
Just remember this the next time conservatives claim to love the troops.
Savage was discussing the motion to rename the tunnel with a caller when he decided to show us a little bit of the “compassionate conservatism” in action. When Savage claimed that renaming the tunnel after Robin Williams would promote suicide, the caller pointed out that people who suffer from and struggle with depression and other mental illnesses shouldn’t be stigmatized.
This is where that “compassionate” bit comes in, because like other right-wing talking heads, Savage isn’t.
Savage hung up on the former serviceman and dove, head first, into a rant whining about the current state of society:
I am so sick and tired with everyone with their complaints about PTSD, depression. Everyone wants their hand held and a check, a government check. What, are you the only generation that had PTSD? The only generation that’s depressed?
He railed against the mentally ill, claiming that America’s problems stem from people choosing to “cry like a little baby,” (as opposed to what, whining helplessly on talk radio?) and saying that America is a “weak, sick nation. A weak, sick, broken nation.” He added:
If the whole nation is told, ‘boo-hoo-hoo, come and get a medication, come and get treatment, talk about mental illness,’ you know what you wind up with? You wind up with Obama in the White House and lawyers in every phase of the government, that’s what you wind up with.
Today’s men “are so weak and so narcissistic” that they deserve to have ISIS beat them, according to Savage, and modern men are “a bunch of losers.” Savage seems to think that we “need men like [him] to save the country” and that “You need men to stand up and say stop crying like a baby over everything.”
Of course we need men like Savage who, from the safety of their radio station and risking no bodily harm to themselves, will whip our men into shape and lead them into battle against ISIS. And we’ll all watch in awe, saying “And there’s Michael Savage, leading from the rear like a Real American Hero™. Look at him, he’s such a great hero, he single-handed beat ISIS because he talked them to death. I think I saw that on a episode of G. I. Joe once.”
Do you know why Savage excoriated veterans with PTSD like that?
Because armchair fascists like Savage make martyrs out of solider corpses, not soldier corps.
