The conservative magazine National Review Online attacked former Rep. Gabby Giffords, referring to her criticism of the Senate voting down new gun legislation as “childish.”
The NRO’s Kevin D. Williamson attacked Giffords for daring to criticize the Senate after it failed to pass new gun-safety legislation.
Referring to Giffords’ New York Times op-ed piece, Williamson called Giffords’ complaints “childish” and said that her being “shot in the head by a lunatic” does not mean that position on the issue should not give her any special preference in the debate.
While Ms. Giffords certainly has my sympathy for the violence she suffered, it should be noted that being shot in the head by a lunatic does not give one any special grace to pronounce upon public-policy questions. Nor does it give one moral license to call people ‘cowards’ for holding public-policy views at variance with one’s own. Her childish display in the New York Times is an embarrassment.
In her piece for the New York Times, Giffords slammed Congress for caving to the gun lobby, saying the fear that the Senate feels from the NRA was no comparison to the fear of the school children of Sandy Hook Elementary. On Wednesday, the proposed Toomey-Manchin legislation failed to gain enough support in the Senate and was voted down 54-46
