Comedian Lewis Black shot back at Rush Limbaugh’s ill-timed, ill-informed comments about Robin Williams’ death being caused by liberals. While everyone knows that Limbaugh’s whole existence is based on causing as much outrage as possible, Black clearly (and rightfully) thought that even he should know better.
Lewis Black was a friend of Robin Williams, and it’s understandable that he would find Limbaugh’s remarks cold and cruel, and beyond inappropriate. The Daily Kos found Black’s response on Facebook, which said:
“F**k You Rush Limbaugh. Your statements were beyond cruel and stupid. They were intolerable. Enough is enough from you. You are an idiot. Don’t you ever demean the death of another human being. He was my friend. You disgust me.”
Time Magazine’s website has a beautiful tribute from Black, in which he said that Williams wasn’t always “on,” but that he remembers Williams as having nonstop energy. On a USO tour to Iraq, Williams spent 35 minutes educating Black and the rest of the group on Iraq’s history. Most people remember Williams fondly, and the tributes he’s received from his fellow celebrities have spoken of someone who was brilliant, kind, caring, loving, and a good person.
“Good person” is a term that we can’t apply to Limbaugh, however, because a good person would never have said what he said about another person’s suicide. What’s worse is that, unlike Shepard Smith, who, according to Mediaite, did apologize for saying that Williams was cowardly to commit suicide, Limbaugh got busy condemning the “liberal media” for taking his remarks out of context. Politico reported on some of that supposed self-defense, where Limbaugh said:
“All of these low-rent, despicable, irresponsible, pathetic, so-called media watchdogs on the left are trying to make it sound like I said that Robin Williams gave up because he was a liberal and is hopelessly doomed to misery and despair because that’s what liberals are devoted to.
What I did yesterday was express some real concern over the fact that they’re glorifying this. I was worried about the coverage of all this leading to copycats.”
Which would be all well and good, except the transcript of that part of his show from Tuesday, which is up on his own site, paints him as the not-so little weasel that he is. He said everything the “liberal media” claims he said, and it’s not out of context. The classy thing to do would have been to tell his audience that yes, he said what he said, he acknowledges it was the wrong thing to say, and he’s sorry if he hurt anybody. But he didn’t. He made excuses instead.
Lewis Black’s big “F**k you” to Limbaugh can’t be big enough.
