It amazes me just how little these Gubernatorial candidates know about numbers and politics these days! It’s almost like anyone in the GOP can get selected for the Vice Presidential slot without having any political or intellectual credibility whatsoever. Perhaps I’m exaggerating…
The same old overused line about half of Americans not paying taxes – and thus them being lazy – is still being touted by the teavangelicals. This time by Colorado GOP candidate Bob Beauprez. He has based his campaign on building unity among the people. It’s very clear just how much he wants to unite people with the word salad being tossed out of his mouth. It’s almost like he’s not thinking before he’s speaking.
In a 2010 speech Beauprez had this to say
I see something that frankly doesn’t surprise me, having been on Ways and Means Committee: 47 percent of all Americans pay no federal income tax. I’m guessing that most of you in this room are not in that 47 percent — God bless you — but what that tells me is that we’ve got almost half the population perfectly happy that somebody else is paying the bill, and most of that half is you all.
Let the epic facepalms begin! This is beyond dumb and the fact that it continues to need to be refuted is beyond infuriating. I guess it’s time to give a simple lesson in mathematics. Here goes.
The population of the United States is approximately 317,000,000 people. However, in 2010, that was 308 million
So of those 308 million, how many are children? Well, according to the US Government, back in 2010 when Beauprez gave this speech, that number was 74.1 million.
That is 23.18% of the population. Hmmm…Something is beginning to add up here.
So the number of elderly, as of 2010 – 40.3 million were aged 65 and older. For the sake of argument we’ll say that only a third of them (13.4 million) are retired.
That is 4.3% of the population.
Back in 2010 the number of severely disabled stood at 34.9 million.
That is 11.3% of the population. I think I see where this is going.
So by conducting a simple Google search that even a simpleton like Beauprez should be able to complete it is easy to figure out where these numbers are coming from.
Those numbers, which should factor into the amount of people that don’t pay taxes, add up to a staggering 38.78% of the population! Which leaves about 8% of the workforce not paying taxes because they don’t make enough money – or they’re unemployed.
It’s amazing what 5 minutes in a Google search will teach you!
