While Cee Lo Green may argue that it isn’t “really” a rape because she was unconscious, a Minnesota State University wrestler was arrested and suspended from the team after he videotaped himself sexually assaulting an incoherent 18-year-old student he had plied with alcohol — after inviting other students to watch.
Angel Mario Vega, 23, was charged on Wednesday in Clay County District Court with one count of felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a helpless victim, and with one count of providing alcohol to someone under 21.
On Labor Day evening, when police responded to a report of intoxicated students, they found two men and two women in the room, which reeked of alcohol and vomit. One woman was lying in a bed and vomiting into a trashcan and the other was lying on the floor unconscious and partially undressed.
When Vega noticed police, they say he grabbed the woman on the floor and told her to be quiet. Vega’s roommate told police that they had invited the ladies over for drinks, and they became intoxicated after losing to the men — but other residents of the dorm tell a slightly different story.
Four students told police that Vega invited them to “see something crazy.” When they did, they found the victim, topless, on the couch in the lounge area. The students explained that Vega said he was going to take her back to his room to “get laid,” then dragged her away.
The witnesses then called floor security.
Police found a photo of the topless student on Vega’s cell phone, as well as a video of him forcing her to have sex with him, according to court documents.
Despite the evidence, Vega says he only “made out” with the victim, though he did admit to giving her Fireball Whiskey. The wrestler denied saying he intended to “get laid,” and was unable to explain how the victim’s underwear ended up on his floor.
The victim is unable to remember anything from that night past the drinking games and a vague recollection of being in an ambulance. Her blood alcohol content was .235 percent when she arrived at the hospital.
Vega was arrested, and his bail was set at $60,000. He has also been suspended from the team pending the results of his trial.
“He has been suspended from the wrestling team pending the outcome of the legal process and university investigation,” MSUM athletic director Doug Peters said Friday.
