Stephen Colbert NAILED it last night it in a piece about the gun-safety background checks bill backlash. In a segment called The Word, Colbert’s ‘truthiness’ was unleashed, highlighting the fact that after the background check bill failed to pass the Senate two weeks ago, we’ve heard some jaw-dropping statements from people like National Review columnist Kevin Williamson, who callously said of gun-violence victim Gabby Giffords,
…it should be noted that being shot in the head by a lunatic does not give one any special grace to pronounce upon public-policy questions.
Rand Paul recently accused the President of using gun-violence victims as “props,” and radio show host Bob Davis shocked the country when he suggested victims of the Newtown tragedy should, “Go to Hell.”
Gun-violence survivors are fighting back though. The daughter of the school Principal shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary, Dawn Hochsprung, asked Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH, NRA rating=A) why she cared more about gun shop owners than her murdered mother at a town hall meeting on Tuesday. It’s important to note that Ayotte has lost 15 points in the polls since her vote against background checks, which 91% of Americans support.
