Stephen Colbert’s trademark sarcasm and irony was on full display as he reacted to the Racist Roberts court’s dismantling of part of the Voting Rights Act yesterday. Colbert called it, “the night African-American history ended.”
Colbert’s guest was Peniel Joseph, professor of African-American history whom Colbert asked,
“This Voting Rights Act itself discriminated against the ability of certain states to change their voting laws based solely on the color of the people that these states tried to disenfranchise? Who’s the racist now?”
The 5-4 majority decision penned by Chief Justice John Robert struck down Section 4 of the law, which monitored state’s attempts to suppress voters of color, saying it was no longer relevant. This essentially kills Section 5, which orders states with a history of racial discrimination to get federal approval before changing their election laws.
Professor Joseph explained, “The Voting Rights Act has prevented racial discrimination in these states that used to basically outlaw African-American citizenship and voting rights, so today’s decision is really terrible for our democracy.”
