Last night, during his take on FOX’s War on Christmas coverage called the “Blitzkreig on Grinchitude,” Stephen Colbert hit his counterparts’ manufactured outrage with a bit of his own. The segment was a reaction to FOX’s reaction to the erection of a beer can Festivus Poll next a nativity scene first in Greenwich, CT and then in Florida’s capitol building. That reaction, as standard, was outrage. The Festivus Poll, an alternative take on the Christmas Tree, has been adopted in recent years by both atheists and anti-commercialists alike.
Colbert, a proud Catholic, started his segment off with the following Inception-esqe mindgasm of irony:
“I’ve got an incoming news flash: I believe in God. And frankly, I have had it up to here with atheists. They’re so smug and annoying, and if they’re created in your [God’s] image, then you are a JERK.“
The rest of the segment is loaded with Colbert’s usual combination of pithy observation and inside-out commentary, toward the end centered around Gretchen Carlson’s assertion that liberal atheists secularist Satanists had made some absurd claim about Christianity “stealing” Christmas from the “atheist” celebration of Winter Solstice — which was the only statement in the entire segment ironic on more levels than Colbert’s opening line.
