Anyone else sick of buffet-style Christianity, in which the supposed devout pick and choose which Bible verses they will adhere, and which they will just decide to ignore? We constantly hear how we should respect the Bible, but how can conservatives demand that society bow down to a book whose lessons they largely ignore when they act in a manner that is more likely to cause Jesus to start flipping tables (Matthew 21:12)?
We’ve put together a list (in no particular order) of biblical passages conservatives just pretend do not exist in their fervor for furthering the oppression of much of society.
In other words, opposition to health care for all…is an affront to God. Tell us more about how you want to try to repeal Obamacare again?
[box type=”shadow”]” Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” (Proverbs 14:31)[/box]
With all the conservative focus on self-aggrandizing, they conveniently forget that God doesn’t view money in the same manner they do. Perhaps rather than suggest that poor kids should perform manual labor for school food, they could use some of the wealth’s money and do something good for society. Hoarding wealth will not get one into heaven.
[box type=”shadow”]“It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:25) [/box]
More about money…and its importance. Maybe they just all skim past this one.
[box type=”shadow”]”Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” (Hebrews 13:5)[/box]
We need to build a wall to keep them foreigners out, and expel all illegals, goddammit!
[box type=”shadow”] “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:33-34)[/box]
By this point, we realize that God just really doesn’t enjoy a focus on money. That God is such a socialist!
[box type=”shadow”]” No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Matthew 6:24) [/box]
This one might need a little explaining. Conservatives love to deny rights to the LGBT community based on their silly love of Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. However, conservatives can not reasonably use Leviticus as an argument against…anything. In Galatians, 3:10, the Bible tells us that “All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
Conservatives, in their fervor to justify their hatred, conveniently ignore this one–which invalidates the old laws laid out in Leviticus, and gives them absolutely no grounds to deny a gay couple a cup of coffee, let alone a marriage. In fact, to even consider imposing the law according to Leviticus upon others they are, in fact, saying “Thanks for dying for us, Jesus…but we’re just going to pretend that your sacrifice does not matter.”
[box type=”shadow”]”Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us.” (Galatians 3:13)[/box]
So much for “standing your ground…”
[box type=”shadow”]”And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.” (Matthew 5:40)[/box]
Despite conservative claims that the homeless are scum…God thinks differently.
[box type=”shadow”]”If you want to be perfect, go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor and you will have riches in heaven” (Matt. 19:21)[/box]
Hey, you know all that stuff about saying “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Or even saying the Pledge of Allegiance?
[box type=”shadow”]”34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[/box]
Of course, according to conservatives, it’s important to pray in schools, in public meetings, in line at Chic-fil-A, etc. Well, God says ‘pray in private, you hypocrites!’
