In the eyes of most conservatives being poor or stuck in a low paying job is some sort of character flaw and being wealthy is a sign of exemplary character. They love to blame the poor for being poor and praise the rich for their success, even if they became wealthy just by being born. Those barely making ends meet, they say, are envious of the “successful,” those who will never want for anything and whose income just keeps soaring while the income of the working man stagnates.
Jon Stewart has had enough of that rhetoric and with Republicans fighting to end long-term unemployment benefits he spoke out on the subject on Thursday night’s Daily Show.
[box type=”shadow”]“Income equality. The left thinks it’s unfair because of systemic disadvantages built-in for the less affluent,” he said. “The rich think it’s unfair because apparently those disadvantages aren’t systemic enough. And, they don’t like the fact the rich are being demonized especially given how compassionate they are to the disgusting poor.”[/box]
After running a montage of right wing politicians and pundits decrying the “takers” who are ruining this country and always demanding more of the put upon “makers,” the wealthy from whom all good things come, he lamented that there is no good way to represent the burden these people are on the nation graphically.
Turns out there is. A graphic from Fox News appeared over his shoulder as he spoke, a dirty hand punching out of a map of the nation below the words, “Entitlement Nation.”
Of course no discussion of income inequality is complete without looking at the solutions that have been suggested, such as Mitch McConnell’s idea that to pay for extending unemployment benefits we could just eliminate health care subsidies for the poor.
[box type=”shadow”]“What a great deal! I would happily extend your unemployment benefits for the mere of cost your healthcare. It’s like a wonderful ‘O’Henry’s’ story without the ironic twist ending – ‘Look honey, I sold all our food to get you that doctors appointment. I stopped treating my cancer to get you this banana.”[/box]
