Faith can make people do great things. It can also make them do scary thing; violent things. It doesn’t matter whether that faith is in Allah or the Free Market; religion can bring out the best in us just like it can bring out worst.
A definite case of the latter comes to us from California, where a Christian activist paid a $200 to file a ballot initiative with the Attorney General in Sacramento. He proposed a “Sodomite Suppression Act,” which, among other things, requires that all gay people in California be executed by firing squad.
The man, Matthew McLaughlin, wants nothing more than to save us, you see: McLaughlin is convinced that God’s wrath will be visited upon all of us, so he wants to spare us this by having all the gay citizenry of California executed.
It’s “better,” McLaughlin said, that non-gay Christians kill gay people rather than everyone have to suffer God’s punishment. McLaughlin called gay sex “buggery,” and “sodomy,” and labeled it “a monstrous evil that Almighty God, giver of freedom and liberty, commands us to suppress on pain of our utter destruction even as he overthrew Sodom and Gomorrha [sic].” From the bill:
Seeing that it is better that offenders should die rather than that all of us should be killed by God’s just wrath against us for the folly of tolerating-wickedness in our midst, the People of California wisely command, in the fear of God, that any person who willingly touches another person of the same gender for purposes of sexual gratification be put to death by bullets to the head or by any other convenient method.
I love it when Christians can’t be bothered to get their own faith right, and I, as an atheist, have to come along and correct them.
Protip: Ezekiel is your friend. Ezekiel explains rather clearly why God destroyed Sodom and “Gomorrha” (we should be thankful he didn’t put “gonorrhea,” I suppose), and it has nothing to do with Teh Buttsechs.
The proposed legislation does not say if high school students or minors who are gay will be treated as adults and included in the shooting gallery.
Under this proposed legislation, a one million dollar fine would be levied against the act of transmitting, distributing, or performing “sodomistic propaganda” to minors.
Because killing them isn’t enough, McLaughlin’s ludicrous bill would make it illegal for gay people to hold public office, be employed by the state, be granted any benefits, or use public assets — like roads.
The “Sodomite Suppression Act” requires 365,000 legitimate voters in California to sign up in support of it before it can move forward.
This may also be the same Matthew McLaughlin who proposed a bill that would make the teaching of the Bible mandatory in 2004; that initiative flew just like the dodo, and died just like the dodo, too.
