Pseudo-historian David Barton has made many ridiculous pronouncements throughout his career as a disseminator of false information. He has said that climate change is a punishment from God for the sin of abortion, that women voting has destroyed our society and that illiteracy is a consequence of the nation “abandoning” God.
Speaking to an audience at Charis Bible College in Colorado, Barton confidently stated that he doesn’t “think they will ever find a vaccine for HIV/AIDS” because the Bible says so.
“Anything the Bible says is right, there is scientific basis for it now,” he said. “The federal government, in the last several years, has spent tens of billions of dollars looking for a vaccine for AIDS and I don’t think they will ever find a vaccine for HIV/AIDS.”
Pointing to a verse, not from the teachings of Jesus but a letter from Paul to the Romans, he said that it was proof that God will never allow us to vaccinate against the virus nor will we find a cure. That verse says that when men “lusted toward each other” they became subject to the “penalty due them.”
Of course he is ignoring the fact that it was long ago proved that HIV/AIDS is not a “homosexual disease” caused by a virus somehow able to determine what one’s sexual orientation is. Like any virus it can and does infect anyone.
Barton has no qualms about passing himself off as an expert in fields for which he has no academic credentials. He claims he is a historian although his only educational credential is a BA in religious education from Oral Roberts University. Now it seems that he is claiming he is knowledgeable in the fields of virology and medical research.
Of course he was well received at Charis which, in spite of its name, is not a true college but a two-year training school for pastors which states on its website:
“Charis Bible College focuses exclusively on the Bible as our main textbook.”
