Given his statements over the past decade, it is hard to characterise Chris Matthews politically. He has admitted to voting for George W. Bush in 2004, has described himself as both liberal and conservative, and has frequently expressed admiration for President Obama. However, there is one position that Matthews has been totally consistent on: his loathing of the Tea Party.
The latest target of his ire? Ted ‘Green Eggs & Ham’ Cruz: junior senator from Texas, prospective GOP candidate for 2016, and as of yesterday, former leader of the doomed effort to force a government shutdown unless the Affordable Healthcare Act known as Obamacare was defunded by the Democrat-controlled Senate.
Comparing Cruz to Winston Churchill, Matthews opined that where Churchill offered leadership and defiance in a time of genuine crisis (Britain’s resistance to sustained bombing and possible invasion by Nazi Germany), Cruz was using nothing but scare tactics, seeking to atomize the American people while advancing himself politically:
“Cruz is out to make a name for himself-not by uniting a country in danger, as Churchill did, not by building up a country’s defenses and morale, as Churchill did. His calling card is just the opposite,” Matthews said. “He seeks to divide, he seeks to destroy, he seeks to demoralize, until the country is so divided, its ability to govern so destroyed, its morale so depressed, that even someone like the freshman senator from Texas starts to look credible.”
As Matthews appears more and more to be assuming the role of the unofficial opposition to the Tea Party, the question many moderate and fair-minded Republicans (some of them friends of mine) are asking is this: When will the Republican Party leadership stand up to these anti-government, anti-welfare, anti-choice, pro-gun, gay-bashing, misogynistic, Ayn Rand-worshipping, corporatist hacks, get them out of the party, get back to governing, and help ordinary Americans back on their feet after the most serious economic crisis since the Great Depression?
