Just when you thought they couldn’t get any more racist, the right wing surprises us yet again! The Chisago County Republican Party posted an extremely offensive meme worthy of American White History Month, this morning. The meme in question bore the words, “PRO-CHOICE: Against slavery? Don’t buy one,” in an apparent attempt to create a false equivocation between slavery and abortion.
Of course, the group is ignoring the fact that one involves a woman’s right to her own body…and the other, owning people.
The post was quickly taken down, after people BESIDES their 159 fans noticed the posting.
The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party wasted no time addressing its not-racist counterparts’ actions:
STATEMENT FROM DFL CHAIRMAN KEN MARTIN ABOUT RACIST POST ON GOP FACEBOOK PAGE
“While the Minnesota Republican Party is shamelessly trying to brand themselves as a Party that welcomes people from ‘all ethnicities,’ the Chisago County Republicans posted a racially offensive picture on Facebook. I find the reference to slavery disgusting and reprehensible. How can a Party work so hard to sell themselves as multi-cultural and welcoming to others when their leadership approves and publicizes racist photos to make a point? The Republican Party is the same old Party they have always been. Actions speak louder than words and today’s actions prove that they have a long way to go to really reach out and include people from under-represented communities. The Republican Party can never claim to be welcoming and inviting to people from other cultures, when they use hurtful images from such a dark and difficult time in our nation’s history. To say this is extremely offensive, is putting it lightly. I challenge the Republican Party to move from their old ways, and to hold their leadership accountable for such a disgusting display of racist and bigoted behavior. “
The Chisago County MNGOP addressed the issue in the typical right wing fashion: denial, pretense of ignorance, and assurances that despite overwhelming evidence, they are not racist. They have removed all who have posting privileges from the page. They “apologized” for the fact that something like that made it to their page, but did not even offer pretense of an apology for the sentiment–then, proving a lack of understanding of history, claimed that the Republican Party is still the same party that fought against slavery:
Of course, visitors to the page have not been quite so forgiving:
True to their nature, the Chisago County MNGOP simply attempted to deflect:
Yes, yes, we all know about both parties’ origins. SOME of us are concerned with the current state of the parties.
