What’s worse than a nine-year-old girl with a gun? A nine-year-old girl wielding a 9mm Uzi submachine gun.
The chilling video footage — released by the Mohave County, Ariz. Sheriff’s office — below captures a firearms instructor’s last moments before this nine-year-old girl accidentally shot him in the head around 10:00 a.m. on Monday. Unfortunately, 39-year-old Charles Vaca died in the hospital that night.
So, how did this happen? Fox 31 reports the girl’s family came to Dolan Springs, Ariz. on vacation and took her to the Last Stop Arizona outdoor shooting range. Vaca was showing her how to shoot when the Uzi kicked back and she lost control of the weapon.
The range owner, Sam Scarmado, told reporters he still can’t figure out what went wrong.
“We really don’t know what happened. Our guys are trained to basically hover over people when they’re shooting. If they’re shooting right-handed, we have our right-hand behind them ready to push the weapon out of the way. And if they’re left-handed, the same thing.”
“It’s like losing a brother. These aren’t employees, these associates of ours, these are family. We’re all family.”
The news reporter then asked a more pressing question:
“How does a nine-year-old get an uzi in her hands?”
“Well, a nine-year-old gets an uzi in her hands when … They’re within the criteria, it’s eight years old, to shoot fire arms. We instruct kids as young as five in shooting .22 rifles, and they don’t et to handle high firearms, but they’re under the supervision of their parents and of our professional range masters.”
This tragic turn of events left one man dead, and has probably scarred the nine-year-old girl for life. Every time these senseless and unnecessary gun deaths occur, we go on and on about how sad we are and how much we miss the person who died. But we never question why we have all these guns around, and why we don’t do more to keep people safe from these lethal weapons.
