Anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000 Americans from across 32 states have staged a massive protest in Raleigh, North Carolina against four years of Republican initiatives.
Largely ignored by the mainstream media, the protestors turned out in force to demonstrate their opposition to a raft of discriminatory and possibly unconstitutional measures passed by the Republican-controlled legislature.
Organized by Historic Thousands on Jones Street and the North Carolina NAACP, the ‘Moral March on Raleigh’ was a massive show of solidarity that brought together progressive Americans from across the country who wished to show their firm opposition to the GOP’s policies, in particular those of the Republican Governor of North Carolina Pat McCrory.
According to ThinkProgress:
[box type=”shadow”]Since North Carolina Republicans took over both legislative chambers in 2010, legislators have eliminated a host of programs and raised taxes on the bottom 80 percent, repealed a tax credit for 900,000 working families, enforced voter suppression efforts, blocked Medicaid coverage, cut pre-Kindergarten funding, cut federal unemployment benefits, and gave itself the authority to intervene in abortion lawsuits.[/box]
Activists in North Carolina have been gathering on what they called ‘Moral Mondays’ since last year to show their support for groups and individuals who are coming under increasing attack from the GOP-controlled legislature. While these protests have seen arrests, there were no reported arrests on Monday as the march passed without incident.
While this show of solidarity and support for the oppressed was almost completely ignored by the media, both liberal and conservative, thinkprogress.com has chosen 15 of the best photos of the day to show the diverse nature of those who had been brought together in their opposition to the state GOP’s highly discriminatory policies.
