Bob Schieffer delivered a brutal smack down to Liar Tony Perkins, introducing him as the leader of an anti-gay “hate group,” and telling him that he didn’t speak for all Christians Sunday during an interview on Face of the Nation.
Schieffer kicked things off by noting this, explaining, “The Southern Poverty Law Center has branded the Family Research Council an anti-gay hate group.” He added, “We have been inundated by people who say we should not even let you appear because they, in their view — quote — you don’t speak for Christians.”
None of this fazed Perkins, who at first opportunity, immediately dove into his lies:
The courts are decided [SIC] to interpret the Constitution and the constitutionality of laws, not to create public policy. When they do that, they create division and they erect barriers to reaching consensus on public policy like this. So no, we stand with millennia of experience that the union of a man and a woman — the sacred union of marriage — is the cornerstone of society
Schieffer called Perkins on his fractally wrong claims, saying, “You said the other day — and I believe you said this — that if the court rules in favor of gay marriage, it would be open season on people of faith. I mean, how can you say that?”
He then cited polls that showed a majority of Americans now support same-sex marriage, before asking, “Doesn’t that mean people want this to be legal?”
Perkins, who can’t abide by the truth, argued that the “nation was evenly divided” on the issue and the questions were framed in a way that favored gay rights.
He was easily dismissed by Evan Wolfson, of Freedom to Marry, an pro-equality activist group:
I would say that Tony Perkins is really an outlier. And what’s to be celebrated here is that the vast majority of Americans have opened their hearts and changed their mind and moved forward to embrace the freedom to marry. And the courts are following where that public opinion has gone
We all hope.
