Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation, Rep. Matt Salmon (R-AZ) got a little lesson in reality from host Bob Schieffer, when the GOP senator was reminded that President Barack Obama will never sign a bill that defunds his own signature health care law.
“We just had a conservative Democrat and a Republican both say there’s no way that this is going to get done in the Senate,” Schieffer explained, going on to describe the push to defund Obamacare as a “kamikaze attack” and a “suicide mission.”
“I find it ironic that the president will negotiate with Vladimir Putin, but he won’t negotiate with Republicans in the House of Representatives,” Salmon replied. “I heard loudly and clearly during the August recess, ‘We want Obamacare gone.’”
Schieffer made sure to remind Salmon that even many Republicans think the defund Obamacare pushers are “just wasting everybody’s time” by rehashing their threats to allow a government shutdown.
“You know what’s going to happen,” Schieffer continued. “You can write this script now. They’re going to strip this thing — not to fund Obamacare — out of this bill in the Senate. They’re going to wait until the very last minute, they’re going to send it back over to the House. And then you’re going to have to vote on whether we just shut down the government.”
Salmon resorted to the usual rhetoric of that says the Democrats should “take the voice of the American people seriously.”
“But this is not the land of wishful thinking,” Schieffer retorted. “This is the land of what’s real and what’s going to happen.”
