A Police officer with the Beaumont Independent School District in Beaumont, Texas was attempting to break up a fight on Friday March 7, shortly after students at the West Brook High School had been released for Spring Break when he twisted the arm of a student being held down on the ground by himself and another officer, breaking it.
The incident was captured on a cell phone video and the snap when the arm breaks can be clearly heard just before the student cries out in pain saying, “Oh my arm” repeatedly. The officer can be heard to say, “I’m sorry.”
While the student was struggling with the officers, the one who broke his arm was clearly applying too much force. The video shows the arm twisted all the way up to the back of the student’s head, further than even the most accomplished contortionist is able to bend.
After viewing the video, BISD Police Chief Clydell Duncan said that Officer Steve Rivers has been placed on administrative leave without pay while the incident is being investigated.
While it is apparent from the video that the young man whose arm was broken is not entirely without blame in the incident, the officer who had a significant weight advantage and the assistance of another officer does appear to have used more force than was necessary to restrain him.
Watch the video below, but be forewarned that it is disturbing.
