Representative Don Young (R-AK) was caught on tape Thursday, demonstrating the sense of privilege held by many in government when he forcefully grabbed the wrist of a Congressional staffer who was simply trying to do his job.
Young had left an off-record meeting where the situation at the Mexican border was being discussed, and was attempting to return through a side door which, according to House rules may not be used when a meeting is in progress. The staffer had been assigned to guard the door and enforce the rule, but Young did not feel obligated to obey. When he was told by the young man that he could not enter that way, Young grabbed his arm in a death hold.
Young eventually apologized for his actions, but only after the video and a photo surfaced showing his assault on the man.
In a statement Young said:
“While returning to the GOP conference meeting to discuss the ongoing situation on our southern border, I was caught off guard by an unidentified individual who was physically blocking me from reentering the room.. Regardless, my reaction was wrong and I should have never placed my hands on the young man.”
Unfortunately, the Congressman further demonstrated his lack of interest in obeying rules, as he can be seen entering through the forbidden door after releasing the staffer who appeared to have experienced pain in the confrontation.
