The Republicans’ song and dance around Sgt. Bergdahl is nothing short of disgraceful and disgusting. While they attempt to justify their current position, that the United States should have allowed Bergdahl die in Taliban custody, they are also busy behind the scene trying to erase all signs of the support they once showed.
For a party that claims to love the military so much, their advocating for leaving an American in the hands of the Taliban is baffling. Regardless of Bergdahl’s actions, which will be investigated, we do not leave an American in uniform behind. The Navy even goes so far as to say it doesn’t matter if somebody falls overboard, is pushed, or jumps; they’re coming home.
All in with Chris Hayes broke down the right-wing hypocrisy on his show last night by showing previous tweets from various Republicans praying for Bergdahl’s safe return, then their absolute reversal—going so far as to call for Bergdahl’s execution for treason.
Hayes also ventured into Reagan territory, and gave a run-down of the Iran-Contra scandal in 1985, in which President Ronald Reagan sold arms to Iran in exchange for three hostages, and then used the money to illegally finance Nicaraguan Contras. Despite Republicans total worship of anything Ronald Reagan did, when Obama does the same thing — trading Sgt. Bergdah for five Guantanamo Bay prisoners — they make a scandal out of it.
