You know how everyone was kind of scratching their heads, wondering why on earth Chris Christie’s staffers would choose to gridlock an entire city just because the mayor of that city didn’t endorse his bid for Governor? Did it not make sense to you, and others, why anyone would go that far, and put that many lives at risk over some small potatoes pay back? It turns out the real answer may have been right in front of our noses all along, and Rachel Maddow may have just blown the whole scandal wide open.
While Chris Christie was busy throwing every single person under the bus that was within arm’s reach of him yesterday in an attempt to distance himself from the steaming turd about to fall on his 2016 presidential bid, he made it very clear and said in no uncertain terms that his staffers had never introduced him to Mayor Mark Sokolich, or even mentioned his name before they sieged Sakolich’s city with gridlock for a week in Septmeber of 2013 by shutting down toll booths to the George Washington Bridge connecting to Fort Lee.
“Mayor Sokolich was never on my radar screen,” Christie said during a press conference yesterday. “He was never mentioned to me as someone whose endorsement we were pursuing … I never saw this as political retribution because I didn’t think he did anything to us.”
As Christie continued to toss around his utter dismay and amazement as to why his staff would conspire to shut down access to an entire city simply because the Mayor of Fort Lee declined to endorse his gubernatorial bid in November of 2013, something over at the Rachel Maddow Show offices started to click and take form as they recalled something else extremely important that also happened during Christie’s re-election run, and happened just one day before Christie’s staff ordered the Fort Lee shutdown.
On August 13th, 2013, Christie’s now unemployed Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly sent out this email, which is widely accepted as the smoking gun to the entire Bridge-gate incident:
The date on that email is extraordinarily important, especially when you consider the fact that on August 12th, 2013, just one day before the gears started turning on the week of hell for Fort Lee, Chris Christie gave a press conference over a controversial decision he made in pulling a New Jersey Supreme Court justice out of contention for life long tenure in the court.
In 2010, when Christie first became Governor of New Jersey one of his first acts as the head of the state was to pull a well-respected African-American judge off the New Jersey Supreme Court bench for what many people believed was partisan reasons. Due to Christie yanking Justice John E. Wallace from the court, Democratic senators swore they would not allow Christie to fill the vacant seat and would block any nomination that came in.
Democrats were successful in blocking a number of judges from filling that seat and when in 2013, another justice named Helen Hoens who is a Republican and the wife of one of Christie’s top staffers was up for reappointment that would have given her life long tenure, Christie pulled her from the Supreme Court because he did not want to subject her to grilling from the Democratic “animals” in the Senate.
And who, you might be asking, was the Democrat most responsible for blocking Justice Wallace’s seat from being filled after he was yanked out of the Supreme Court, and who, you might be asking was the same Democrat that Christie was trying to save Helen Hoens from being subjected to in her bid for life long tenure in the New Jersey Supreme Court?
Her name is Loretta Weinberg. She’s the leader of the Senate Democrats. She represents District 37 … Do you want to take a guess now which district Fort Lee is in? Exactly. It’s in District 37.
Rachel Maddow had this to say about the stunning revelation:
[box type=”shadow”]”Roughly 12 hours after Governor Christie blows up at Senate Democrats, and torpedoes the career of a Supreme Court justice who he likes, because he says the Senate Democrats are animals and he’s not going to let that Justice loose to those animals, the leader of those animals in the Senate sees her district get the order of destruction from Governor Christie’s Deputy Chief of Staff. Or maybe it was about that endorsement.”[/box]
Right. The endorsement …
