Yesterday two members of President Obama’s cabinet were before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee making their pitch for a limited war effort in the country of Syria. The war drums have been beating louder and louder over the last week and a half, and yesterday was the first of many times that Secretaries of State and Defense, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel respectively, will appear before various Senate committees in both public and private, “classified” meeting pleading their points on behalf of President Obama.
Clearly this is an issue that has many sides and many differing opinions. One thing is for sure though, everyone involved is taking this question very seriously. From President Obama actually putting the question before Congress to Senator John McCain taking the hearing so seriously yesterday that he…was caught red-handed playing video poker on his iPhone while his colleagues and two cabinet members discussed an upcoming war in Syria? Really, Senator McCain?
But if you think a ranking, veteran member of the Senate — who is also a decorated Vietnam veteran to boot — playing an iPhone game in the middle of one of the most important hearings of the last five years is appalling, you should see his tweeted response after getting caught with his hand in the iCookie iJar.
“Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing – worst of all I lost!” That’s what McCain tweeted out in response. You’re right Senator McCain, you did lose. The only surprising thing is that apparently we had enough respect for you left to lose some more of it over this nonsense. Get back to work, Senator.
Here’s a gentle reminder of the kind of warmth and human compassion John McCain displays regularly when it comes to discussing warfare.
