What a roller coaster ride it’s been!
CBS has finally decided that it will back away from the liefest that was the October 27 report on Benghazi. Lara Logan appeared on CBS This Morning today to announce that CBS had been “misled,” and that a correction would be issued.
We’ve all heard Dylan Davies’ riveting tale: He, as fictional superhero Morgan Jones, scaled a 12 foot wall. He heroically knocked a terrorist to the ground, fighting desperately to save his friends. This patriot even lied to his superiors to protect himself, as he was nut supposed to be at the compound that day. He even saw Chris Stephens in the hospital. It was truly a monumental story! In fact, it served to fuel right-wing nut job conspiracy theories very well:
Unfortunately, Davies’ accounts conflicted with reality. Davies was never at the compound, as he initially told a superior. After this information was revealed, CBS firmly backed the lying liar In a statement issued to the Huffington Post, CBS News chairman and 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager defended the story:
We are proud of the reporting that went into the story and have confidence that our sources, including those who appeared on ’60 Minutes,’ told accurate versions of what happened that night
While CBS maintained that Davies lied to his employer to protect himself, it could not explain why he had, as it was revealed on Thursday, lied to the FBI as well.
CBS finally pulled the report, vowing to review the report to work out if Dylan Davies may have been “misleading” in his story. The review did not go well for CBS’s account of things! Lara, obviously not enjoying the taste of crow, admitted that CBS was wrong:
“We were wrong to put him on air…We will apologize to our viewers and we will correct the record on our broadcast on Sunday night.”
Logan said that they knew about, and stood by the initial lie because it had always been portrayed as a show of patriotic, selfless heroism. Davies was not supposed to be at the compound, so denied being there. It’s that simple. However, on Thursday, it became known that Davies had lied to the FBI as well, despite that he had assured CBS that the FBI had the same story as they did.
