With all the talk about Benghazi, and the attempts to blame the attack on Obama, right-wingers often forget one thing: there was someone who was actually behind the attack on the embassy that took the lives of Sean Smith, Chris Stephens, Glen Doherty, and Tyrone Woods.
In a gigantic victory for the Obama administration, United States Special Operations forces captured one of the suspected ringleaders of the attack in a secret raid in Libya over the weekend. Officials say that Ahmed Abu Khattala was captured on Sunday near Benghazi by American troops and is now in custody in “a secure location outside Libya.” There were no casualties in the operation, and all United States personnel have safely left Libya.
One official said that the ringleader’s capture represents “a reminder that when the United States says it’s going to hold someone accountable and he will face justice, this is what we mean.”
Last year, the U.S. Attorney in the district filed charges against Khattala and a dozen others in connection with the terrorist attack. Until now, none had been apprehended.
Officials will not say where Khattala is being held, but indicate that he is “en route” to the United States. His point of arrival is unknown, but he is expected to be arraigned in Washington.
