John Boehner has revealed the exact reason for which he is suing President Obama. The reason? President Obama allegedly exceeded his authority by delaying the employer mandate, allowing companies like Holly “Hobby Lobby” Fisher’s husband’s employer to limit benefits and deny children with heart conditions proper care.
The Weeping Cheeto unveiled his two-page bill he intends to advance through the House declaring a right to sue the President for exceeding his authority in…Republicans getting exactly what they wanted, and were willing to bring our nation to the brink of destruction in order to accomplish?!?
No, he’s not high (though it is likely you asked that very question)–but perhaps drunk.
“Today we’re releasing a draft resolution that will authorize the House to file suit over the way President Obama unilaterally changed the employer mandate,” Boehner said in a statement. “In 2013, the president changed the health care law without a vote of Congress, effectively creating his own law by literally waiving the employer mandate and the penalties for failing to comply with it. That’s not the way our system of government was designed to work. No president should have the power to make laws on his or her own.”
On John Boehner’s own web site is a post from 2012 in support of repealing Obamacare, citing the employer mandate as one of the ills of the law.
Other Republicans, of course, opposed the employer mandate before jumping on board Boehner’s latest stunt, speaking in support of a government shutdown temper tantrum. “I’m just going to say, ‘hold the line,’” Iowa Rep. Steve King told Time Magazine. “They’re afraid of a political penalty — history doesn’t show that.” He added, “If we don’t do the right thing it’ll result in the implementation of Obamacare, that’s my fear.”
Arkansas Rep. Tom Cotton said at the time, “We’re not shutting the government down. We are fully funding the government. We’re simply stopping Obamacare to go into effect for one year — and it’s clearly not ready to go into effect.”
No matter, though–Republicans now want to sue President Obama because they got exactly what they wanted in the first place–and they plan to advance Boehner’s sham of a bill to the Rules Committee on July 16. Boehner has allowed himself an “out,” however, just in case the American public catches on to the asinine nature of this stunt. David Schnittger, the Orange Man’s chief of staff, said on Twitter that the legislation was a “draft language” and “not necessarily final.”
Nancy Pelosi called it was it was, though, via a statement delivered by spokesman Drew Hammill. “Republicans are wasting taxpayer dollars on another toxic partisan stunt. This lawsuit is just another distraction from House Republicans desperate to distract the American people from their own spectacular obstruction and dysfunction.”
We doubt that the lawsuit will actually go anywhere, but it will be interesting to see it play out in court.
