At a news conference earlier today, President Obama announced his support for a plan that will allow people to retain their existing healthcare plans for a one-year period. This plan will not affect the original legislation. The Department of Health and Human Services will be responsible for administering the plan.
This is a bold response from President Obama in reference to accusations that he had broken his campaign promise that people could keep their existing healthcare plans if they liked them. Several people received notices last month from their current insurers that their policies would be dramatically affected or changed with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The cause of this was simply because their current plans failed to comply with the baseline standard mandated under the ACA. The baseline was set into place to safeguard the insured so they could afford plans and not be flooded with extreme deductibles if treatment was needed.
This one year grace period for individuals to obtain health insurance was not originally intended, but due to recent and massive complaints regarding cancellations as Obamacare has unfolded this past month, the president has determined this grace period to be the correct move in efforts to help the American people keep their plans.
President Obama assured citizens that he has heard them loud and clear and takes the blame for the discontent that the website has caused. He admitted that he was unaware of just how dysfunctional the website was at the start, and stated that the grandfather clause that was set in place was not sufficient enough to uphold his promise that the American people could keep their existing plan. The president pledged that the the immediate issues would be solved, allowing the ACA to work for the American people.
This announcement was very important for the president. It was a courageous effort to speak for the American people in attempts to get health coverage back on the right track. Forty million people are still uninsured in this country and the president vowed that he would not turn his back on those who have the ability to get health insurance for the first time in their lives.
