The white, male gunman in the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado Springs, Colo. has been captured. SWAT team negotiators inside of the building were able to shout to the man and convince him to surrender. According to CNN, nine police and civilians have been taken to local hospitals and are in good condition. One Colorado police officer and two civilian victims have died in a tragic loss of life.
In an amazing show of force, well over 100 police were on the scene. The pivotal act in turning events in the police’s favor occurred when an armored Bearcat vehicle rammed the side of the Planned Parenthood building. The purpose was to create a distraction for the police, and later people within the clinic escaped through the holes created by the vehicle.
Police were also able to link into the building’s security cameras and watch as the gunman walked through Planned Parenthood’s halls. Some of the people were able to shelter in the building’s safe room.
The gunman fired shots before he came into the building indicating that he had no plans to exit the building. He may have planned a suicide or suicide by police, but when the time came, he changed his mind. The gunman walked out of the building and is currently being interrogated. If the gunman’s intended goal was Planned Parenthood, he is likely to boast of his accomplishments.
The shooter brought some items in bags, including propane tanks, with him to Planned Parenthood, which led police to suspect explosive devices. Police are currently going through the building in search of people still in hiding and any hidden explosives. If there are any bombs, the bomb squad will diffuse them.
“We don’t have knowledge who has been killed. We believe none of our staff or patients were severely injured. But we still don’t have verification at this time. Planned Parenthood across the nation has an excellent safety reputation. Our own security systems were operating at top watch. Live camera feeds were working, our staff did exactly as they were trained to do. We operated very well today. We have cameras and will have to see how he broke the perimeter [in order] to keep an armed person from entering the building in the future.”
The standoff lasted five hours. It will take from hours to several days to process this large crime scene. Police will also investigate the gunman’s home and car, which may be booby-trapped. No motivation or whether a network was involved is known at this time.
People who were forced to shelter in place have now left. Take a look as events unfolded:
