Two Las Vegas police officers and a civilian were murdered Sunday at what appears to be an ambush attack at a pizza store that spilled over into a nearby Walmart. A man and a woman approached two officers as they were eating lunch at Cici’s Pizza on N. Nellis Blvd.
The pair opened fire on officers Igor Soldo and Alyn Black. One officer was able to return fire, and wounded one of the suspects.
After they shot the officers, the shooters stripped them of their weapons and ammunition, then moved on to a Walmart across the street, according to witnesses. The duo then shot a person at the front door and killed themselves in what appears to be a suicide pact.
Sources in the Las Vegas police department told the Las Vegas Review Journal say that one officer was dead at the scene, and the other died later in surgery.
Witnesses told police that the shooters yelled, “Tell the police the revolution has begun.”
At a 1 p.m. press conference, Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the male shooter yelled, “Everyone get out” before the two opened fire. Both were carrying large duffel bags–the contents of which have not been disclosed to the public.
The shooting marks the first time since 2006 in which a Metro officer has died while on duty. The police department will be doubling patrols while they determine if a larger group, like the one in nearby Bunkerville that has been promising a ‘revolution,’ is responsible for the attack.
“It’s a tragic day. It’s a very, very difficult day,” a Sheriff Doug Gillespie said. “But, we still have a community to police. We still have a community to protect … It is a tragic day in the Las Vegas Valley.“
The identities of the shooters and the civilian victim have not been released to the public. We will update you on this story as more information becomes available.
