BREAKING: Bradley Manning Says ‘I Want to Live as a Woman’

Well, we certainly didn’t see THIS coming.   Bradley Manning, the United States Army private who was just sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking classified documents to Wikileaks, has issued a statement read on The Today Show e earlier today saying she is a woman.

Here’s the statement:

Subject: The Next Stage of My Life

I want to thank everybody who has supported me over the last three years. Throughout this long ordeal, your letters of support and encouragement have helped keep me strong. I am forever indebted to those who wrote to me, made a donation to my defense fund or came to watch a portion of the trial. I would especially like to thank Courage to Resist and the Bradley Manning Support Network for their tireless efforts in raising awareness for my case and providing for my legal representation.

As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning. I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition. I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the feminine pronoun (except in official mail to the confinement facility). I look forward to receiving letters from supporters and having the opportunity to write back.

Thank you,

Chelsea E. Manning

(sigh) how progressive to keep using “he” and the name she used as a man…

THAT ASIDE from what I see this person does deserve some punitive action, some of what they leaked may have done some good, but some appears to have caused major problems.. :S

Here is what I don’t understand. He just got railroaded into 35 years of prison. I don’t really think sexual identity matters much in solitary. And the other thing I don’t get. This guy exposed ILLEGAL Government action. How is this in any way traiterous? just my .02

Bradley Manning: I want to live as a woman.

Takes a 9% pay cut and the government starts making all decisions about his reproduction.

  • Dan

    I don’t care what he/she wants to live his/her life as. I really don’t care…..HONESTLY!!!!!!
Just as long as I and other U.S. TAXPAYERS are not stuck with the cost of his/her hormone replacement therapy.
I just don’t see how that is a normal part of basic healthcare the government is required to provide any inmate.
If his family wants to pay for it, and the government will allow it, I DON’T CARE!!!!!!! Then.

Your government made it possible that this bold and courageous young man has to go to Fort Leavenworth for the next 35 years for something, the most of You would not be courageous enough to do… Now You guys pay for him.

Libertarians used Bradly Manning…. here’s another thing “the left” didn’t see coming:

I’ve been saying that the NSA “scandal” (involving Libertarian Glenn Greenwald of Cato Intitute and Paulbot Snowden) is another RW fake scandal. It’s not about privacy. It’s about undermining government, specifically the democrat in the White House, for political purposes.

Forbes: “Assange’s Emerging Politics: Rand Paul And Libertarian Wing of GOP Represent ‘Only Hope’”

Forbes (Page 2): UPDATE: Wikileaks Party under fire in Australia for what some are describing its “lurch to the right,” revealing in filings that “they want the fascist Australia First Party, the pro-shooting-in-National-Parks Shooters and Fishers Party , and the “mens rights activist” Non-Custodial Parents Party to win a seat instead of the Australian Greens. Maybe this really is an international conservative movement.”

NOTE THIS: “What’s fascinating is that Paul (the father, less so the son, who still has aspirations to actual head up the vast government he says he despises) largely rejects a modern view of democracy, claiming that “pure democracy is dangerous” and that the founders never intended actual democratic rule. “Democracy is majority rule at the expense of the minority,” wrote Paul last year. “Our system has certain democratic elements, but the founders never mentioned democracy in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, or the Declaration of Independence.”

    • Dan

Randel, the Declaration of Independence is just a document informing the King of England that the founding fathers were tried of abuse brought upon the colonies by the crown.
Randel, I hope you know that the Bill of Right’s is the first 10 CHANGES, aka Amendments to which there are a total of 27, to that imperfect document we all call the Constitution of The United States of America.
Randel, by reading the documents you mention, you will also notice there is no mention of speed limits, drinking age, smoking pot, the requirement that one wear clothes when in public, or even abortion. But yet some how asswipes such as yourself seem to always fall back on these documents, when trying to limit the right’s of individuals

Manning is a male. He was born a male. He will die a male. No amount of “self-identification” will change that fact.

Note I said “male”, not “man”. We already knew he wasn’t much of a man, being a filthy traitor and all.

    • RoughRugger

Boy, that was a klassy response from start to finish.

      • Paul Levinson

Yup, no danger of thinking that guy has too much compassion or understanding cluttering the empty space between his ears.

    • http://phoenix58.home.mindspring.com/ Talmadge Walker

Well no. If he has the proper procedures done he’ll be a woman. And since he’s in prison your taxes will pay for it. Sorry.

  • Juliet

Brad, you don’t want to be a woman in the United States right now. Enjoy the perks that come with the XY chromosomes.

    • http://gravatar.com/pigle36278 pigle36278

Ok, thats’ kinda funny right there^

  • Paul Levinson

Looks like you’re too dry for today’s humorless world, Bob…If we didn’t have Colbert and Stewart, we’d be totally adrift in a sea of overwhelming sanctimonious seriousness, tempered only by the occasional break to navel-gaze and make sure one’s core values have not been singed or burned by the TeaThuglicans. Have a nice day now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alfred.lehmberg Alfred Lehmberg

Well — he sure has the courage of one, eh?

    • AATTP

      What does that mean?

      • Karyn

        Wow…what an enlightened comment.

    • Dan

Have you ever served? I’ll bet you haven’t.
Me, US Army & National Guard 12 years

  • Paul Levinson

Is this door knob a master PR hack, or WHAT? JAY-SUS! Talk about refusing to yield the floor! But remember, his/her goal was never to hurt anyone or his country! Nope…his/her REAL GOAL was to become the next person to have the Gov’t foot the bill for a sex-change operation in Prison. Yup, that’s what’s really going on here! Amazing! I have nothing against trans-gendered people, and if I were facing 35 yrs in prison with all the fine citizens there, I might want the same thing. But, c’mon! Why waste the time and money for the trial? Just let ‘er rip with breaking the law (oops, my bad, “whistle-blowing,”), talk to a shrink to let him-her know your fears about being in prison, and your sexual-identity crisis, and watch the bills disappear from your in box stack. Ineffingcredible!

For some reason this was my thought too. He was smart enough to not get caught for what he did. But all that free medical care probably sounded good when he determined that he had made a choice that was going to cost a ton,;.. now on taxpayers and the govt.

      • Paul Levinson

Thanks, Ojy. Another post-er informed me that Manning’s gender identification issues were well known before the trial. I have nothing against people wanting to change their genders…but at their expense, not the taxpayers’. Manning could have made this his mission instead of illegally outing 1,000s of Gov’t docs. that “the people needed to know” (per his Unilateral choice). I’m not a blind-loyal flag waver for our troops, so when one does something stupid and then tries to work the system when he gets caught, he should be called out on it.
        Imho, that is.

  • bradley

    What. The. Fuck.

  • Ross Robbins

Yeah, Bob, you tool, he wanted to risk going to prison for the rest of his life to get an operation that they don’t actually pay for. Congratulations on figuring it out.

    • Bob Cull

Sarcasm isn’t your strong suit is it, Ross?

  • Bob Cull

Was this his plan all along? Leak some documents, get arrested, go to prison, get my free sex reassignment?

    • http://none kathyahayes

Seriously Bob? I always read your comments here and this is the first one I thought was well….stupid. Sorry Bob, but I really doubt this ‘plan’.

      • Bob Cull

I was being facetious, Kathy, you know, beating the Teapubs to it. They were/are going to say it so I said it first. I thought that those who know what I think would realize what I was doing. :D

      • Bob Cull

By the way, Kathy, if you look for my comments, you might want to watch for my articles too, I’m writing for them now as well.
