The incident took place just as a sporting event was ending and the winners were being recognized. At least 30 people have been pronounced dead in a small city just South of Bagdad after a suicide bomber detonated himself in the center of a crowd of sports fans.
The police captain from the town gave the following statement to the media:
‘They were just handing the trophy to the winners, the suicide attacker blew himself up in the crowd.’
Yahoo News reported:
‘The village is near Iskandariyah, a town about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the capital. The police captain said more than 65 people were also wounded in the blast. A medic at Iskandariyah hospital confirmed the toll and told AFP that the attack took place around 7:00 pm (1600 GMT).’
Even the mayor of the small village was killed in the blast, a medic on the scene said this:
“‘The mayor died in hospital as a result of the serious wounds he suffered in the blast.’
While no one has yet taken responsibility for the bombing, in this area, it is highly likely that the Islamic State was behind this attack. Iskandariyah is a part of the “triangle of death,” which is an area with both Sunni and Shiite Muslims. The area is well-known for violent conflicts.
According to Al Jazeera:
‘The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group that controls swathes of territory in Iraq’s north and west was behind the attack, according to Amaq news agency, which is affiliated with the group.’
