Not shortly after Paul Loebe broke the story about a sailor threatening rape against a young woman who wanted to join the Navy, another sailor decided to try his luck at “trolling.” This time instead of a rape threat the US Sailor, Andy Datino, posted a photo from the infamous comic Cyanide & Happiness to the Being Liberal Facebook page.
The “friends” that he tagged were accounts made with fake names – Dan Daly and Smedly Butler, the names of two famous and highly decorated Marines from WWI. They were clearly aliases but were certainly accounts of active-duty Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. One of them, Dan Daly, claimed to be an “0811” from the 10th Marine Regiment – which is an artillery cannon crewman – and appeared to have a good working relationship with the sailor.
Unlike the pathetic piece of garbage, Petty Officer Lord, this sailor did indeed appear to be trolling. His common sense, however, appears to be on par with Nick Lord’s.
Freedom of speech does not mean you are free from reprisal for your ignorant statements. When people call you out for your jokes made in poor taste and you are overwhelmingly outnumbered perhaps it’s a clue to shut your mouth and take your tasteless humor elsewhere. You may be an actual troll – unlike that vile soldier from last week – but understand the time and place! You might serve the nation, but it gives you no right to act with immunity. Your service is precisely that – service! It does not bestow upon you extra privileges. It is a sacrifice.
Dan Daly – whomever he may be – clearly does not understand that rape in the military is not a joke!!! It is a serious epidemic! Each year the 16,000+ servicemembers that are assaulted and don’t report it could be his best friends, his comrades, his brothers and sisters-in-arms who are putting their lives on the line – but staying silent because they know that “friends” like him will abandon them should they even dare step forward to get the help they need.
The statistics are startling and revealing! Yet we have women like Tiffany Wood, a service member, who is willing to defend the rape culture of the military. It is endemic in the military and if it isn’t corrected it will further erode the trust that we, as civilians, have placed in those in uniform.
If any of the readers wish to reach out and make a difference in this instance the Commander of the 10th Marine Regiment is Colonel Clifford Weinstein, and he can be reached via email here.
The phone to reach the command element of that unit is 910-451-6978. That line should take you directly to the Executive Officer of the unit who reports to the Colonel.
Maybe there is a lesson to be learned. We hold the military to a high standard. This epidemic of rape needs to be halted in our armed forces. It is time to make Congress act. The only sensible solution is to ensure that all rape claims are investigated by someone other than a higher ranking officer in the command – because oftentimes he could be the rapist himself.
This is the documentary “The Invisible War” in its entirety. Let’s pray we don’t have to update it and that it can be a relic of the past – a reminder of our failure to ensure that safety from sexual predators in the military came at a cost.
