Just when you think the scrambled verbal diarrhea produced by delusional idiot Michele Bachmann cant get any more insane, she just makes things crazier! During a radio interview, Bachmann accused the Obama administration of encouraging more children to come to the United States…for medical experimentation.
“We can’t imagine doing this,” she said. “But if you have a hospital, and they are gonna get millions of dollars in government grants so that they can conduct medical research on somebody — and a ward of the state can’t say no, a little kid can’t say no, if they’re a ward of the state — so here you could have an institution getting millions of dollars from our government to do medical experimentation, and a kid can’t even say no. It’s sick.”
“We have 400,000 foster children in this country, and now President Barack Obama is trying to bring all of those foreign nationals, the illegal aliens, to the country and he has said that he will put them in the foster care system,” Bachmann said. “I will tell you from personal experience, we don’t have enough foster parents now in the country for the kids in America. We certainly don’t have enough foster parents for all of the illegal aliens that the president is trying to bring in right now.”
According to RightWingWatch, Bachmann’s insane theory stems from a misreading of a hospital’s policies:
It all starts with the case of Justina Pelletier, the teenage girl who was placed in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families because of a dispute between Boston Children’s Hospital and her parents, who were backed by other doctors from Tufts Medical Center, over her medical diagnosis.
Last month, she was finally returned to her family and now Bachmann has introduced legislation called “Justina’s Law” that would prohibit “federal funding for medical experimentation on a ward of the State.”
The narrative created by Bachmann and others within the Religious Right about this case asserts that the Boston Children’s Hospital had received a federal grant to study somatoform disorder which prompted doctors to diagnose Pelletier with that condition so that the state could take custody of her and then use her as a guinea pig in the hospital’s medical experiments.
This entire narrative is based on a bizarre misreading of the hospital’s policy for allowing Wards of the state to participate in medical research trials, which is actually designed to protect such wards. The fact that Wards of the state can participate in medical trials under certain conditions and within specific guidelines is being intentionally misrepresented by Bachmann and others on the Right to claim that foster children are being used for wild medical experiments funded by grants from the federal government without oversight or limits.
The resolution accuses Children’s hospital of having ““an internal policy that allows for children who are deemed ‘wards of the State,’ including foster children, to receive treatment or be involved in research that presents great risk even if there is no prospect of any benefit to the child.”
However, the hospital’s policy only sanctions research involving “greater than minimal risk with no prospect of direct benefit” if it is related to the child’s status as a ward. Children involved in this kind of study must have an advocate appointed to serve on their behalf, as well as any guardian or “in loco” family the child may have, RawStory points out.
Michele Bachmann is so utterly, amazingly, mind-bogglingly stupid that it’s sometime difficult to tell fact from fiction when it comes to the garbage that spews from her mouth. Recently, Bachmann claimed that the children fleeing from crime and violence are invading rapists, and that gay people want to “freely prey on little children sexually.”
