Three Boy Scout leaders in Utah are facing the possibility of misdemeanor or even felony charges after posting a video of themselves gleefully toppling a rock formation that has stood for 200 million years in Goblin Valley State Park.
The men have defended their actions saying that they thought they were doing their civic duty and protecting innocent lives. They said that the formation seemed to be about to fall at any moment.
The cameraman can be heard to say as he filmed the event, “Some little kid was about ready to walk down here and die and Glenn saved his life by getting the boulder out-of-the-way. So it’s all about saving lives here at Goblin Valley.”
Park officials are not quite so amused with the actions of the men. Eugene Swalberg, a spokesman for the State Parks authority said, “It is not only wrong, but there will be consequences.”
He also said that it is rare for tourists to destroy formations in the state’s parks and that it is “highly, highly inappropriate. This is not what you do at state parks. It’s disturbing and upsetting.”
After the video was posted on Facebook, it elicited some amazingly irresponsible comments like, “Too funny,” and “You have so much fun!! Thanks for saving a life [smiley face]. Rock On.”
At least one person who saw it had the good sense to realize that this was the wrong thing to do and advised that it be taken down before authorities saw it and someone found himself in jail.
Dave Hall, the man behind the camera replied, “Nobody’s going to jail. You have a 2,000 lb boulder that is teetering on a 2″[sic] dirt ledge and about ready to fall off on it’s [sic] own. 5 minutes before this video we watched a family with many small children walk right below the rock to take a family photo. We didn’t do anything until they were gone because we didn’t want anyone to get hurt. One gust of wind and that rock was falling whether someone was there or not. …”
“I’ll take my chances with the cops rather then my conscience after hearing a family was crushed to death by a rock I was prompted to move.”
