Once again Republicans have used lies to further their political agenda. This time they attacked President Obama for swapping five prisoners for U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. The Republican leadership has been telling anyone and everyone with a microphone that they had no previous knowledge of the President’s plan to swap prisoners. But, according to senior GOP aides House Republicans have known about the plan since 2012.
Speaking to the Washington Post, the aides said that senior Republicans were briefed on the plan to swap prisoners in early 2012, after sending letters to President Obama requesting more information about the possibility of an exchange. At this time, the GOP was still clamoring for Bergdahl’s release. So, it would appear that many politicians knew a lot more than they are admitting.
According to The Washington Post article:
“The outlines of the proposed Bergdahl swap had been public since the spring of 2012. Several news organizations, including The Washington Post, had learned of the proposal much earlier but refrained from reporting on it at the request of the Pentagon, which argued that public disclosure that Bergdahl was a subject of a negotiation between the Taliban and the United States could put his life at risk.”
On June 3, Obama reminded reporters that he had briefed Congress about a potential Bergdahl swap for “some time.”
“We have consulted with Congress about that possibility for quite some time about the possibility that we might need to execute a prisoner exchange in order to recover sergeant Bergdahl.”
