Authorities shut down a stretch of Interstate 70 between Grain Valley and Oak Grove, MO on Monday morning to remove a mannequin hanging from a bridge overpass that was wearing a mask depicting President Obama’s face.
While deputies were removing the mannequin, they noticed what they believed to be an explosive device affixed to the dummy. The Independence Police bomb unit was called in to investigate, and all lanes of interstate 70 were closed as a precaution.
“The item that we had, we thought possibly could have been explosive, so we went ahead and shut down I-70 is both directions to ensure that if it was explosive there was nothing that was going to cause a hazard to any passerbys, and once we removed that from the scene we opened up I-70 almost immediately,” explained Sgt. Ronda Montgomery.
No explosives were found, and police are investigating who put the mannequin on the bridge. “We are talking with neighbors and canvassing the neighborhood,” Montgomery said. “We are putting the pieces of the puzzle together.”
