John Boehner promised on Wednesday to send a Continuing Resolution to the Senate that he knows has no chance of surviving a vote there. He announced, “We’re going to continue to do everything we can to repeal the president’s failed health care law. This week, the House will pass the CR [continuing resolution] that locks the sequester savings in and defunds Obamacare.”
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that it was simply a measure designed to, “meet the needs of the TEA Party, the anarchists and I say that without any equivocation.” Reid goes on to note that the TEApublicans do not want any government to work at any level be it local, state or federal and that they enjoy any day that is a bad day for the government.
Mainstream Republicans have been trying to warn them that this is a very bad idea for some time now but no one seems to be listening, much like the teen age kid who pays no attention to his elders when they tell him not to drink. That kid has to go out get drunk then sick and finally badly hungover before he learns what his parents tried to warn him of having learned the hard way themselves. So too, it appears will the TEApublicans have to learn what John McCain tried to tell them.
McCain said not long ago of the plan to shut the government down to get rid of Obamacare, “Republicans ought to understand if we shut down the government, Congress always gets blamed–rightly or wrongly–Congress gets blamed. We’ve seen the movie before. It’s just some of them weren’t around at the time; I was.” He was of course speaking of the 1995-96 shutdown when the Republican Congress called Bill Clinton’s bluff and sent him a spending bill which he had told them he would veto. He vetoed it and government shut down for a total of four weeks and Congress took a brutal beating in public approval.
Charles Krauthammer columnist long time political pundit and staunch conservative said on the O’Reilly Factor, “The tactics that these brave people are telling us we have to do is to jump off a cliff so we can show our manhood. There is — unless you believe that you are ready to shut down the government, unless you are ready to deliver on the threat, you don’t go near there.” He went on to advise them to focus on the next election cycles saying, “You play for the elections in ’14 and in ’16. You build a constituency. And you don’t show that you are completely irresponsible and shut down the government, knowing that you will in the end have to cave.”
It appears however that the TEA Party fringe is in complete control of the House of Representatives and Boehner has given up on trying to control and lead them and is instead taking the path of least resistance by leading from behind. He must know they are on a suicide mission but rather than try to explain to them what a mistake they are making he is going to let them have their own way and then when they all lose their seats in 14 they will no doubt blame him for having been an ineffective leader.
