NARAL Pro-Choice America has revealed that crisis pregnancy centers all over the United States have been persistently lying to women and girls about the consequences of having an abortion.
Styling themselves as non-partisan and neutral, crisis pregnancy centers are in fact part of a concerted effort nationwide to dissuade women and girls from seeking abortions. Many receive financial support from conservative lawmakers, and more than half the states in the US support them financially in some way. ‘
Now a joint study by NARAL Pro-Choice America and the Feminist Majority Foundation has documented just some of the lies women and girls have been told that are designed to shame, frighten, or embarrass them out of having an abortion.
Some of the lies women reported being told included:
That college education would be free if she kept the child.
An abortion could lead to breast cancer.
Reinforcing the false notion that most women regret their abortion.
Propagating the myth that contraception is equal to abortion.
Other examples include telling a woman that her partner would leave her if she chose to terminate her pregnancy and that abortions result in infertility. One Native American woman was told that given her ethnic background, she should be “more in tune with the natural world.”
Speaking at the launch of the project the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, Ilyse Hogue, said:
“Women who seek information about their health-care options deserve honest information — not lies and scare tactics.”
These lies, while hurtful and idiotic, are also totally counterproductive. It has been estimated that 90% of females seeking an abortion have already decided to go through with the procedure before they visit a physician or a clinic. These clinics perpetuate the stigma that is still attached to abortion in America, and promote a wider, more sinister stereotype: that women and girls are emotionally and intellectually incapable of making vital decisions about their own bodies and their health.
