What promised to be an interesting debate between creationist Ken Ham and Bill Nye the Science Guy did not disappoint! Ham began his arguments by redefining key terms like “science” and “evolution” among others, basing his entire theory around the belief that secularists have co-opted scientific terminology.
As the debate raged on, Nye assailed Ham’s ridiculous attempts to ignore peer-reviewed data in favor of falling back on magic. Whenever presented with a difficult concept, Ham would simply reference the Bible, including as an explanation of the ultimate source of matter itself. As part of his arguments, Ham lamented the collapse of Christian morals in society.
While Ham’s ignorance was on full display, a stroll through his Facebook page shows that his devout believers far surpass the levels of idiocy evidenced by whatever a discussion of science versus magic can be called.
This “debate” proves unequivocally the need for comprehensive education standards to which ALL private, public, charter, and home school children and educators must be held. We can not risk allowing our children to be “dumbed down” by those who feel that their faith trumps science.
Currently, students in the United States rank 24th in the world in science. With Ham’s help, we can slide even farther down the list.
